An unwelcome guest greeted a food inspector from the Springfield-Greene County Department of Health and Human Services during an inspection of a Springfield restaurant on March 28.
According to the report, a live rat was found in the three-bowl sink at Sam's Southern Eatery, 1631 N. Glenstone Ave. The restaurant also had a shelf "covered in mouse droppings" and was missing a thermometer, both violations that would result in a new inspection.
Food inspections take place one to three times a year, depending on the type of food served, the population served, the difficulty of preparing the food, and history. Restaurants that prepare food with raw ingredients are inspected more often "than convenience stores that only serve potentially dangerous foods like popcorn and soda," the agency saidSpringfield-Greene County Health Department.
Problems found during the inspection are classified as priority or non-priority violations. Priority violations affect food safety, such as: B. Cross-contamination between raw and ready-to-eat foods, improper food temperatures, and poor personal hygiene and employee health. Multiple priority violations can result in the closure of a facility. Non-priority violations in themselves do not have a direct impact on food safety, e.g. B.
