Kensington Gardens' bronze Peter Pan statue commemorates the park's fictional resident and was commissionedPeter PanAuthor and local resident J.M. Barrie (1860-1937). Taking inspiration from Kensington Gardens, he made the statue to capture the imagination of Peter Pan surrounded by fairies, squirrels, rabbits and mice. Through the long water you will findarco, a twenty foot tall sculpture by British sculptor and artist Henry Moore (1898-1986). The travertine Roman arches, though decidedly more imposing than Peter Pan, are impressive, especially against the verdant summer backdrop.

Art becomes a fixture in Kensington Gardens thanks to the Serpentine Galleries. Opened in 1970, Serpentine Galleries is a pioneer in contemporary art, with regular exhibitions by internationally renowned and emerging artists. Summer is the perfect time to visit as the Serpentine Gallery has commissioned an architect who has yet to work in the UK to design a temporary pavilion to be built outside the gallery. About five minutes away, across the Serpentine Bridge, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery is another gallery space designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. Together, the two gallery spaces make Kensington Gardens a cultural destination thanks to a year-round program of exhibitions and events.

The opulent Victorian splendor of the Albert Memorial is the highlight of the south side of Kensington Gardens. The monument was erected in 1872 in memory of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, who died in 1861 at the age of 42. As you walk through the monument, take a moment to view the incredibly detailed carvings, ornaments and decorations, representing Albert's passions and social interests. In the center is Prince Albert, in front of the Royal Albert Hall named after him, holding a catalog of the great exhibition he helped organize in nearby Hyde Park in 1851.

On the north side of the gardens you'll find the Italian Gardens, a gift from Prince Albert to his wife Queen Victoria in the 1860s. The Italian Garden was inspired by the royal family's vacation at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, where Prince Albert developed. great interest in garden design. It has four slender octagonal piers with fountains, carved urns, and a special view of the long watercourse on the south side. Beautiful at any time of the year, it is especially lovely when the trees take on their autumn hues and golden glow at night.
